Pitcher Drilling
Company uses an ENVI MemoVane to evaluate the in-place un-drained
shear strength (suv)
of soft to stiff clays & silts. The memo vane incorporates
Geonor standard type vane.
The vane is
advanced to the test depth while encapsulated by pushing outer rods.
Small diameter vane rods are then pushed to extend vane beyond the
capsule. Once the vane reaches the test depth, the torque
motor is placed over and clamped onto the vane rod string.
The vane inner rods are then loaded using an electric motor until
yielding of the soils surrounding the vane occurs. The vane is
then released from the electric motor and is rotated clockwise
twenty times with a pipe wrench to completely remold the soil.
Once the soil is remolded, the electric motor is again clamped onto
the vane inner rods. The vane is then reloaded and the
remolded strength of the soil is recorded. All measurement and
storage of shear strength data takes place down-hole immediately
above the van allowing high precision and reliable shear strength
readings.
